Nessi Gomes – Morning Mirrors

Nessi Gomes - Morning Mirrors - Single artwork

Since the release of her debut album, Diamonds and Demons, back in 2016, Guernsey born singer-songwriter Nessi Gomes has focussed on touring the world while also releasing a string of remix, collaboration and cover singles, but now she has dropped a brand new tune of her own, Morning Mirrors.

An atmospheric synth bass opens things and is quickly joined by Nessi’s trademark delicate acoustic guitar, along with a kind of chanted vocal before the main song begins and instantly it’s clear Nessi’s vocals are as remarkable and enthralling as ever.

From there an almost hyperactive drum part joins things and, initially, feels like it might override the more nuanced aspects but it soon becomes clear it acts as something of a counterpoint while bringing an infectious energy to the piece that is oddly revitalising.

As is something of a hallmark of Nessi’s writing the lyrics take on a spiritual approach but balance this so as to not be alienating for the slightly less spiritual amongst us, while it brings a positive message focusing generally on self empowerment.

As a deeper aspect of this, and bringing the title and even the artwork into focus somewhat, it looks at how different aspects create a whole both of an individual or a group and, while this is presented more specifically in terms of the feminine, it could equally be read beyond that.

This all makes Morning Mirrors another great entry in Nessi Gomes’ catalogue of songs, whether the meaning resonates or not, showing quite why she’s had the success she has from her origins in bands in Guernsey to festivals and stages around the world.
