Coming from Leeds, Honeycub are somewhat of a surprise addition to the roster of Guernsey based L’Islet Records, but, on listening to their latest single Battleground, it’s clear why the band and label have come together.
Blasting out of the blocks like the best kind of groovy stomper, Battleground throws back to the late 90s and early 00s bringing to mind everyone from A and Terrorvision to Radiohead and Placebo but with something of a modern twist and power reminiscent of the like of Royal Blood.
Along with that the trio, Ollie Wilson (vocals/guitar), Eddie Dawson (bass) and Charlie Lord (drums), add a nice new spin to the well established loud-quiet-loud formula of grunge, while they get pretty deep lyrically exploring mental health but never becoming too earnest or over ponderous about it.
Produced in the shiniest sounding way possible, but without losing its natural power, Battleground might be only the second track I’ve heard from Honeycub but it’s got me looking forward to more and made me want to see them live even more after missing their visit to Guernsey a few months back.
