Those Fucking Snowflakes – Everything Is Absolutely Fkkkkkkd

Those Fucking Snowflakes - Everything Is Absolutely Fkkkkkkd - EP coverIt’s fair to say the last twelve months have featured a fair amount of what could be described as ‘animated political discourse’ thanks to a rather obvious combination of pre-existing tension, the onslaught of a global pandemic and the seemingly final arrival of Brexit.

Creating a soundtrack seemingly purpose built for all of that have been Blackpool trio Those Fucking Snowflakes on a pair of previous EPs (U Ok Hun? and Straight Wealthy White Male Suffrage) and now a brand new one, their first released via Louder The War Records, the appropriately titled Everything Is Absolutely Fkkkkkkd.

Things start off with some heavy, angular grooves accompanying a tirade against the failure of real action on climate change by both the government and middle England with the excellently named Uncooperative Crusties (the band’s knack at great titles remains firmly intact as you’ll see).

Their attention then switches to the rise of the far right, both in the UK and US, on first ‘single’ from the set, Due Some Terrible End, as the grooves of the first track continue but with a deeper post punk feel that firmly indicates a band evolving not revolving.

They then focus even more onto issues across the pond (though the Gammons still take a battering) to round off side one for the raging sonic assault of White Isn’t Right which demonstrates the band’s knack of combining immense depth and complexity, both musically and lyrically, but wrapping it in a terrific barrage of post punk noise.

The nearest thing the band can manage to pop song opens the second side, By The Power Of Barnard Castle, which manages to encapsulate the band’s general outlook excellently while railing against former chief advisor (or is it Grand Vizier) to Boris Johnson, Dominic Cummings and his now infamous trip to a small town in the north of England.

Cuadrilla Can Fuck Right Off feels like something of a throwback, subject wise at least, with its tirade against fracking but is once again some excellently angry, bass heavy, post punk.

And then it’s all wrapped up on Mendacious Meddling Milkshake Recipient which is a storm of angular guitar noise and probably the most pure punk moment of the record that ends on a defiant cry of ‘Nazi Yaxley Fuck Off’ making its point and leaving it nicely stuck in your head.

On first impression Those Fucking Snowflakes can appear like something of a noisy gimmick with silly outfits and lots of swearing, but it quickly becomes evident there is far more to them and they bring their own noise to the current crop of socially and politically aware and angry bands of whom they are, maybe, one of the most abrasive and direct after Sleaford Mods.

With a production style that sticks on the right side of lo-fi they’re never going to be a band for the causal music fan and are all the better for it and, while still epically fuzzy, Everything Is Absolutely Fkkkkkkd is maybe more listenable than past releases while I don’t think their insistent currentness will hinder them as the songs are great.

This then is another terrific step forward for a band who deserve to be heard and, in this day and age, maybe need to be heard.
